The story centers around a mute, orphaned pickpocket who goes on the journey of a lifetime when he is hired as a publicity stunt to ride an elephant from Edinburgh, Scotland, to Manchester, England. Kerr adds mystery, double-crosses, danger, and intrigue to embellish the true story of an actual circus elephant that was sold at an 1872 Scottish auction to the Belle Vue Zoological Gardens. Narrator Robin Laing's accents enhance the characterizations--from the English accent of the menagerie owner to the Indian lilt of the elephant trainer and the Scottish brogue of the vicious Edinburgh street gang leader.
