Sometimes messy and misguided (bloodletting, purging, lobotomies), at other times marvelous and nearly miraculous (MRI scans, antibiotics, organ transplantation), the history of medicine is a tale of desperation, boldness, ingenuity, and, unfortunately, plenty of casualties. In this brief survey of medical science, physician Cooper highlights tools of the trade and technology that played vital roles. Why she focuses on only a dozen items to spotlight is unclear, and why she didn't include some essential medical gadgets (scalpel, EKG, dialysis machine) is also a bit head-scratching. But what is here is compelling, beginning with the venerable stethoscope. Other familiar items include the hypodermic needle and syringe, mask, X-ray machine, and microscope. The ether inhaler, bone saw, trephine (for boring holes in the skull), heart-lung machine, prosthetic hip, obstetrics forceps, and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) machine complete the inventory. A very short discussion of cardiac surgery, radiation therapy, medical ultrasound, anesthetic agents, amputations, and injections is included. Trailblazing scientists, anatomists, and doctors are introduced. In sum, Cooper's clever approach to concisely introducing medical history highlights the healing profession's reliance upon technology.
